What is Somatostatin?
Somatostatin and its synthetic analogs are used clinically to treat a variety of neoplasms (tumors). It is also used for the treatment of giantism (an excessive secretion of growth hormone) and acromegaly (a hormonal disorder that most commonly occurs in middle-aged men and women).
This polypeptide hormone is widely distributed throughout the body, especially in the hypothalamus and pancreas, that acts as an important regulator of endocrine and nervous system function by inhibiting the secretion of several other hormones such as growth hormone, insulin, and gastrin. It exerts its biologic actions by binding to specific high-affinity receptors on the cell surface.
On the other hand, octreotide is a synthetic substitute of somatostatin which mimics natural somatostatin pharmacologically, although it is a more potent inhibitor of growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin than the natural hormone. It is marketed by Novartis under the brand names Sandostatin® and Sandostatin LAR® Depot.
